What Is Hydroquinone USP 2%

Hydroquinone cream is a skin-bleaching agent. It works by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme necessary to convert the protein tyrosine to melanin, meaning that it prevents dark skin from making the substance responsible for skin color. Hydroquinone lightens skin, and can only disrupt the synthesis and production of melanin hyperpigmentation. It works by inhibiting an enzyme reaction in skin cells. Lightening freckles, age spots, and other skin discolorations associated with pregnancy, skin trauma, birth control pills, or hormone replacement therapy. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Hydroquinone is a strong inhibitor of melanin production established as the effective ingredient for reducing and potentially eliminating brown skin discolorations on skin often referred to as melasma.
